I have a seagate baracuda 500gb hard drive. Few days back my computer started running very slow and was stuttering. The next day I turned it on, it wouldn't boot to windows and shows:-
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred.
I have 3 partitions on this drive. I formatted the 1st partition and imstalled a fresh copy of windows. The computer booted to windows but the stuttering continued. This time it was worse than before. I restarted the computer and it went to windows diagnosing window and stayed there for like 2-3 hrs. I restarted the computer in hope of formatting it again and backup my data this time. But the windows installation stuck at 3% and I again restarted the computer. Now the hard disk would only show 4gb in bios while disk management and windows partition shows 4gb of unallocated space. Tried connecting it to another computer, still the same thing. I am not sure whether there was any cracking noise coming out from the hard drive

Depending how valuable that other data was I think your drive is on its last legs, and it may require professional help to recover anything off it. The professional services are generally twice the cost of a new drive as they don't want everyone going to them, just people who really can't afford to lose the data.

So you have to weigh up if its worth it. That is your choice to make.

How old is your drive? crackling or clicking noises? if clicking, its not a good sign at all.. nor is only showing 4gb in bios.

For a few minutes I was reading 4gb as 4tb and thinking, that is a nice bonus. I wouldn't mind an extra 3.5tb for free, then I woke up :)

Perhaps put the drive in another PC and run this on it: http://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/

Its a 4year old drive. It doesn't make any such noises right now. I have other two untouched partitions in which I have valuable data and I guess the head is faulty. If I replace the head with a new one will it be functional?

Hi there Akash44100,

The fact that the drive appears as having 4 GB of storage indicates some physical flaw. In case the data is really important, my suggestion would be to contact a data recovery company.
If you don't want to go with that option, then you can just scan the drive with some data recovery tool and see if this would help.(I doubt that)

You can't really know if the head is faulty. You will need special equipment and dust free environment, so I guess that this is not really an option.

Cheers,
