Getting The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block in event viewer

Ok so recently, I was checking my event viewer and found out a lot of errors showing "The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, is a bad block".

I downloaded seatools from seagate website and ran it and it failed short DST test but it passed S.M.A.R.T.

Currently I am making a backup of all the data on the hard disk to my external hard drive.

Does deleting all partitions and re-creating them solve the bad blocks issue?.

Is only fix chkdsk /f /r? or I need to use 3rd party software which does better repair?.

Hi there gamer1291,

That is really unpleasant.

It's good that you've backed up your data.
I believe that reformatting the drive would not help, as most probably these are some physical bad sectors.(HDD's platter) They would eventually continue to appear until the drive fails. Yet, as you've already backed the data up, you can reformat it(or even write zeros to it - fills in 0 value in each sector) and retest afterwards.

If the drive is under warranty, you can just RMA it.

Thank you for replying, I have done format and even deleted partition and re-created it.

So far the errors have stopped coming but don't know how long.

The drive seems to be working fine otherwise but tad bit slower than normal maybe due to physical bad sectors as you have said.

Unfortunately my hard drive warranty got over

, so I have no choice but to buy a new one.

Can you suggest currently best selling hard drive ? I saw some SSHD hybrid hard drive are they good?.

Should i continue to buy seagate hard disk or shall I try for Western Digital hard drive next one?.

Well, I believe you can use it for storing non important data, until it performance decreases or just fails.

I doubt that anybody could tell you which is the best or most reliable drive.
Generally, the performance of drives goes like this: SSD>SSHD>HDD.
Their price follows the same pattern.

So, as you already have an SSD and if you just need a drive for storage purposes, you can go with HDD once again.

As a WD representative, I can't really comment on other drives except for the WD ones. I guess you can take a look at both WD Blue and WD Black.

I mostly game on my desktop pc so I basically just want a large storage enough for big games without slowing down the loading times.

I saw western digital black series for performance and gamers but its too expensive and I don't know if its worth it in the long run, if it also fails within 2-3 years of heavy use then I would be disappointed for paying so much.

I might go with western digital blue but is 2 TB version available in blue series with 7200 rpm?

In my country so far i only saw blue 2 TB with 5400 rpm that would be bad for my gaming needs.

Well, this is why WD Black has 5 years of limited warranty. It is designed to be used heavily. In case it fails after 3 years, it would still be under the 5 years warranty period and you will be able to RMA it.

All the WD Blue models that are above 1 TB of storage space have 5400 RPM.

So, it's really up to you. It may be a good idea to consider some other HDD brands as well
