So I was watching a movie the other day when all of a sudden my PC just hang and restarted. Got to the usual "press any button to skip checkdisk" and i did. Then it restarted again, but this time it didn't boot: no post but all fans and disks spinning. I took out RAM and GPU and resat them, but still no luck.
Fortunately, i have onboard graphics support, so I tried without the GPU and I had the same problem. Resat the RAM again and voila it came back to life. Tried one last time with GPU but it was back to no post again.
Took it over to another PC with a larger PSU to test it out but still no luck. the VGA led on the motherboard (m5a99fx pro r2.0) came on and stayed on.
I'm thinking the problem is definitely the card, but I'm secretly hoping there's another option maybe. Either way what would be the possible causes? I couldn't sniff out anything burnt and all the other components are working just fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Specs:
AMD Phenom II x6
Asus M4A78LT-M Motherboard
8Gb DDR3 RAM
ASUS 6870
450W PSU
Windows 7

well, honestly, it is nearly a 6 year old gpu, google says the 6870 came out 22 October 2010, so...it could have just died, I've seen plenty of cases where gpu's much younger have died...there anyway you can nab another 6870 cheap used or something you could use? Your Phenom x6 is still a decent cpu despite being older too...I used one with an hd 7870 for awhile and noticed no real world difference between it and my much stronger on paper i5 pc, multitasked and played everything I needed it to smoothly.

If everything works and then suddenly it doesn't when you plug in the gpu, and you've already tested if your psu is ok...then everything just points to the gpu having died.

I know it sucks, another is fairly cheap on ebay. Even a...

I know it sucks, another is fairly cheap on ebay. Even a budget gtx 750ti is better than the 6870 according to this comparison site, http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=883&gid2=452&compare=geforce-gtx-750-ti-vs-radeon-hd-6870

Thanks. I'd pretty much accepted it. It's just crappy timing. I was just wondering why it could have happened?
