GTX 1080 vs GTX 980 Ti 1440p

Alright, so with my GTX 970 not quite being able to max most games at 1440p 60+ FPS, I've been looking to upgrade my GPU. It's mostly a birthday gift from the wife, and she has "permitted" me to buy a GTX 1080. Well, I'm not rich, so ~$650 is very expensive for me, but I can buy it. However, after looking at the GTX 980 ti prices on NewEgg, I can get on of those for ~$420 and save ~$200.

I want to max everything including using DX12 (minus AA, who needs it at 1440p!?) I play everything from The Witcher 3, to World of Warcraft 25 man raids, to Ark Survival Evolved and everything in between, at of course 2560x1440. Will the GTX 980 ti do this with 60+ FPS? Now that the GTX 1080 benchmarks have been rolling in for a good month or two, can the 980TI be OC'd to 1080 stock performance? Or maybe instead go with a 1070 and OC? Or should I just leap into the 1080?

Also curious if my i5 4690K at 4.4 (on water) will be a bottleneck to either card (I intend to do a bit more OC on it today, cool at ~45C now so I figure I have some more room).

Solution
The GTX 980Ti should play most things at 1440p and maintain 60+ fps but it won't last as long as the GTX 1080 will and the GTX 1080 is likely to hold its price longer for when you sell on EBAY when you get your next upgrade.

The GTX 1070 is a better buy, than a 980ti. It is a bit faster, and cost is similar. With some tweaks, 1440p, ultra WoW, is doable, @1440p. I put one in a friend's 3570k rig, a couple weeks ago. Legion ultra is more demanding than WoD was. I moved the slider to 10, turned view distance to 7, shadows to low, and disabled SSAO, and was getting 60+ in Ashran.

I max WoW (max AA but not MSAA) with my 970 at 1440p 60+ FPS, so there shouldn't be any tweaking at all with a GTX 1070. I've been watching a lot of benchmarks on the 1070 and I am leaning that way, I know it's cheaper, but I don't want to tweak anything, I just want to max and go without a second thought.

There was some minor tweaking, just to get the FPS up, for Ashran. With it being a 40v40 man, outdoor, battleground, it can be more demanding than your normal dungeon, or even a 25 man raid. It was doing 60+ everywhere else, on ultra, and 80 plus with the tweaks.

the asus strix 980 ti beats the 1070 in every benchmark and that's not overclocked, steve.

For 1440p it is indeed a 1080 or 1070 you need. Some AAA games like Deus-Ex will really enjoy the GTX1080 and struggle a little bit with a GTX1070. But, is there gonna be some driver updates and real improvement in terms of FPS? I don't know.

Both Cards are clearly designed towards 1440p but how much better is the 1080 compared to 1070 for a 300USD difference? Hard to say. Let us know how you feel about it when playing :) I am curious

Alright, so I went with the EVGA GTX 1080 SC and I have to say, I'm not disappointed. It maxes every game I've played so far at max settings 60+ FPS 1440p, with a few exceptions. It doesn't stay at 60+ FPS in The Division even with AA and SS off, but it does stay above 50 when not in combat. Also, Ark Survival Evolved struggles to stay above 30 FPS, but I'll leave that to poor optimization.

Ultimately, I am happy with my choice, Lara and her surroundings have never looked so beautiful as they do with max settings and 1440p, all while typically staying less than 70C.

Again, thanks for your inputs.

Interesting feedback thanks! So as expected the GTX1080 is really a 2K card and does make sens playing demanding games! You helped me a lot as i was about to upgrade as well ;)
