Hello, I need to move my Internet and computer to a different room, to a room where there is a cable to the hd cable box, for the TV. Can I simply disconnect the router and modem, from that rooms cable, and reconnect to that cable in the other room? In the simplest terms, I guess I'm asking if the cable coming into the house supplies both the Internet and cable thru the same single wire. ,

Solution

Probably.
But it depends a LOT on exactly how the house coax is wired. You as few splitters as possible between the router and the coax entry point.

Yes, you can do that, however...

Sometimes, cable companies install a professional splitter with amplification (usually in your attic near the attic access). When they do so, they connect the cable feeding your modem with amplification. If you switch the modem to the current TV cable plug and there is lower performance, check for such a box, and identify and swap the connections. If you are considering adding a simple splitter so you can connect both TV and modem to the same cable connection, you have a good chance of seeing a performance issue and even internet drops because of the weaker signal.

Mr George is correct. If each coax is a home run to the splitter then making the swap won't be hard. Look at your splitter and see if there is even a difference between the connection that feeds your modem and the tv. There may not even be a difference.

That's an affirmative.

The only thing you have to worry is, if your TV is going through a signal booster then the Internet tap should be BEFORE the booster, unless the booster is of the two-ways kind. If you don't know, just hook it up anyway, the worst that can happen is Internet doesn't work.
