Hey all, upgrading my cpu and wanted to know what I need to do to make this as smooth as possible.

MB: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0
Current CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 3.20 GHz

want to upgrade to a AMD FX 8350 Black Edition 4.0 GHz 8-core AM3+

Am I able to do this without an OS reinstall?
If so what drivers should I update before the switch?
Anything else you guys can think of would be appreciated.

Thanks

As long as the new CPU is compatible with that motherboard, you should be able to just swap them over and Windows will automatically figure itself out.

In the past I have successfully swapped the following without needing to reinstall the OS:
Core 2 Duo E6300 --> Core 2 Quad Q9650
Celeron D 341 --> Pentium D 925
Athlon 64 3800+ --> Opteron 175

None of those required anything more than swapping the CPU over and letting Windows boot. Having said that, I've not gone between 2 different architectures before, but I'd imagine it would work the same way.

Hope that helps

Hi,

General rule of thumb is that you need to move up 3 levels in the hierarchy table to be worthwhile upgrade. This is only a one tier upgrade, really not worth it in terms of performance improvement. If you do decide upgrade (no, don't) no reinstall of the OS needed, it will auto-detect the new hardware. Your BIOS looks like it will not need to be updated so you should be good to go. Watch how you handle the CPU with respect to static discharge.

I understand what you are saying about 3 tiers but my old cpu doesn't support SSE3, SSE3.1 or SSE4 and I need that for a new game I just bought. So I did upgrade it.

I upgraded the bios installed the new cpu and had to reset the boot sequence but other than that it worked fine.

TY for your time.
