So recently I decided I wanted to buy a bigger and better motherboard, I currently have a msi micro motherboard and wanted to upgrade to an MSI 970 GAMING DDR3 2133 ATX AMD Motherboard. I was curious on a few things, I know that I will need a copy of windows to use for the motherboard, but will I have to buy a new processor and hard drive as well? my current processor is an amd 3.8 ghz processor and it overclock to I believe 4.3 or 4.0. As long as my processor meets the requirements of this motherboard I can use the same one right?

Thank you,

We'll first need to know what processor you have.Is it an ATHLON or FX-Series CPU.Right click on My Computer>Properties>Processor.MSI 970 Compatibility for FX-series CPU Ranges from FX-4100 to FX-8370E.http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/970_GAMING.html .All the compatible AMD CPUS'S For MSI 970 Gaming can be found here.If your current processor fits in the compatible list, dont worry about an upgrade. And as for Hard drives, back up your useful datas and format the hard disk so it will be as good as new,OR you can buy a new one if necessary.Any more questions i'll be happy to answer

Sorry a bit confused, still pretty new to this all. my processor says it's an AMD A-10-5800 APU with radeon graphics (tm) 3.80ghz. is that compatible? As well as reverting everything, would I need a new hard drive as well? or would it just be safe to back it up?

Your APU is a socket FM2 and won't run on an AM3+ mobo. Do you have a budget? For your APU might look at something like the Rock's FM2A88X Extreme6+ (about $90). And can prob use the HD and OS you currently have, again as long as not from a prebuilt computer

it is from a prebuilt computer so I guess I am going to have to snag all of that again? would this processor be compatible with this motherboard? AMD FD8350FRHKBOX FX-8350 FX-Series 8-Core Black Edition Processor
