So I decided to try over clocking my R9 390. It's the MSI version.

I overclocked to 1,100 MHz which is what the core clock is on the 390X model.

My temperature in afterburner was 78 degrees Celsius. It never seemed to go higher than that though.

I am using the fractal R5 case and I installed a second fan in the front down near where the HDD and SSD are located. So it has three fans instead of the two it came with.

I have no liquid cooling systems.

My PSU is an EVGA SuperNova 750 G2 220 80+gold rated 750 watt.

Is that temp too high?

Not really, your temps seem fine and pretty typical for that card/cooler. Most reviews have it hitting around 70-72C at stock, and 76-78C when overclocked to around ~1150 on stock voltage, so your result is perfectly normal.

If I'm not mistaken, the R9 390 is the same silicon as the 290/290X, which both would run happily into the 80s before any thermal throttling happened. That said, I'd be adjusting fan curves to be more aggressive and push it back under 70 just because there's no reason to push up near the thermal ceiling if your cooling allows it.

I just ran it without overclocking it and it made it up to 76 degrees Celsius. This was with the stock core clock of 1040.

I was using GTA 5 as the test game like I did when I overclocked it.

It bounced around between 75 and 76 without being overclocked.
