I am wondering after many long hours of troubleshooting whether my motherboard, an MSI Gaming 5 Z97, is compatible with a GTX 1080, or perhaps damaged.

I attempted to buy and install a new GTX 1080 Gigabyte Gaming G1 graphics card, and it resulted in my computer restarting when entering into games. Upon trying to roll back to my old GTX 970 GPU, it displays the same issue, so now I can't play games or record Let's Play episodes for my YouTube channel. I have spent about 24 hours spread over a week or so troubleshooting this issue. I figured you all will probably have some thoughts that have not occurred to me.

Here are the things I have tried:

  • * Very first thing, I checked temperatures. CPU never got above 60C, and GPU never got above 67C. both tended much cooler than that when not under continuous load. So overheating is likely not the issue.

    * Then I thought my ~7 year old XION XON-700P12F 700W PSU was the issue, so I ordered a new 750W EVGA supernova G2.

    * That didn't fix it, so I put my GTX 970 back in to RMA the graphics card that I thought was bunk.

    * Upon putting in the old GPU, that was now displaying the restarting issue as well.

    * I proceeded to use DDU to wipe the graphics drivers and try many, many different combinations of GTX 1080 vs 970, old XEON 700W PSU vs new EVGA 750W, PCIe slot 1 (PCIe x16) vs slot 2 (PCIe x8)

    * My computer could run Prime95 and Memtest86+ for hours without issue, but crashed when running FireMark/PassMark when getting to the 3D rendering section.

    * I m-flashed my BIOS to update my motherboard to the most recent drivers.

    * I unplugged and plugged back in all the cords leading to and from both PSUs in turn.

    * Spent the better part of 3 hours on tech support with Nvidia. They said they didn't know what was going on, that I should send in my 1080 for a return, and not sure why my 970 was acting the same way.

    * Checked circuit breaker in my house to make sure it was in good shape. Tried running my PC with either GPU on a different circuit in the house.

    * Most recently reinstalled windows on my machine (thinking it was some slippery driver issue), resulting in a seeming improvement in stability (it went from restarting just after the intro splash screens to restarting after ~15 minutes in game). I got a BSOD from 15 minutes of No Man's Sky, and crashed out of Ark: Survival Evolved again after about 15 minutes.

    * Next on the docket will be to swap out my motherboard for another of the same model. If that doesn't work, I have a second EVGA PSU standing by. If neither of those work, the only parts left that I've not replaced yet would by my CPU, RAM, or HDDs

PC SPECS:
CPU: i7-4790k with Noctua NH-D14 cooler
Motherboard: MSI Gaming 5 z97
RAM: 2x8GB G.Skill TritonX
GPU: GTX 970 / GTX 1080
PSU: XION XON-700P12F 700W / EVGA Supernova 750W G2

So do you have any thoughts on what might have gone wrong? How can I get this fixed once again?

Hang-the-9,
I have tried my two RAM sticks individually. It seemed to me that the system was less stable when doing so than running with both, but neither one seemed to be shot (the PC behaved essentially the same, instead of being much less stable with one or the other RAM stick).

I did run Memtest86+ for 7 hours with no errors, and all passes. I'm not sure whether that's indicative or not.

Edit from OP: Seemingly, the issue has been fixed. On 8/16/16, Nvidia released a new version of their graphics driver, 372.54, and additionally, DDU released a new version on the same day. I used DDU to restart *in safe mode* and wipe all drivers (I'd wiped before, could not remember if I'd done it in safe mode or not yet). Upon wiping the drivers *in safe mode*, I installed the newest nvidia driver. Seemingly the issue has been fixed: my PC used to crash after no more than 15 minutes of gameplay tops, and I played 120 mins the other night without issue.
