Hey all,
I've got an old HDD that has some files on it that I'd like to retrieve. However, it was my primary drive of a previous build and thus has all of the boot files. Will this be a problem if I plug it into my current PC? Will the two boot files conflict? or something?

Solution
No, there won't. But you may have to setup the bios to boot from your current drive. As soon as you connect it to the computer, it might reorder the boot settings. It's nothing serious, just don't panic if it tries to boot from the older drive. You may also use the boot menu if the computer has one and just select the proper hard drive to boot from. Usually F8, F9 or F12 are assigned to the boot menu in most bios.

I do that all of the time when I setup a new PC or upgrade the HDD in an existing PC:
1- remove the old HDD (to eliminate the risk of wiping it by mistake during OS installation or the OS setup doing weird things due to detecting an existing install)
2- install the new HDD/SSD
3- install the OS
4- put the old HDD back in
5- copy files I need over
