have 8gb Ram, max is 12gb; I'm assuming 2x4gb currently; which brand is most reliable for the 8gb pack i need, Kingston or Crucial (or other)?

Yes, 2 x 4 GB currently, replace removable 4 GB with an 8 GB for max 12 GB.
