Hello hello,

I have been having this BSOD: Thread stuck in device driver for months. I have used DDU probably like 30 times over the course of time to uninstall my AMd drivers, as well as reinstall windows a couple months ago. After the re-installation I got a brief period with no blue screens, but they soon returned.

I changed pci-e slots on my motherboard this past Friday to see if it would help and I thought it did as for 2 and a half days I was blue screen free. But they returned today about 4 minutes after boot. So my patience is running thin and I am coming to you nerds for some help. Since the blue screens are inconsistent it's hard to get a good feel for whether or not it's an issue with my motherboard or with the graphics card itself. If it was the motherboard, would both pci-e slots give me trouble? Or can I rule out that possibility. And if I got the blue screens after a clean install, is it still something software related? Also powercolor confirmed that my gpu bios is up to date. And I'm currently on 16.8.1 drivers. Halp please.

Thanks in advance

And of course here is my build
MB: Gigabyte z87x-ud3h
CPU: i5-4670k
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
GPU: Powercolor PCS+ AMD R9 290x
RAM: 16GB G. Skill Ripjaws X 1600Mhz
Storage: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB SSD, WD Blue 1TB, Hitachi Laptop HDD 750GB
PSU: Corsair CX750W Bronze

Solution
If it is your motherboard then both PCI slots could give you trouble.

I would be more inclined to think it was the GPU or the PSU though.

The CX series are known to have weak capacitors and with a high powered card like your 290x it could actually be being starved for power.

Would my ram cause my graphics driver to BSOD? That's interesting.

As for my PSU, that would be unfortunate, but much cheaper and less of a headache than trying to find a replacement board, or making a new build.
I will start off testing with integrated, though AMD always seems to show up in the blue screen error message. I have no other PSU to test with either unfortunately. Unless I walk into best buy, buy on there, use it, then return it.

But in case it wasn't clear and not considered, bleu screen error points to Direct X and Amd Drivers dxgkrnl.sys and atikmdag.sys

Additionally the BSODs are random and have no actual trigger so who knows when the next one will occur. Ive even gotten it on the Windows log in screen, browsing the net, playing games, on the desktop, watching videos etc. Anytime regardless of load.

Provided you have installed your win and drivers correctly, a bad PSu may cause all sorts of errors. Persoanally, I would replace that CX regardless. Get an XFX TS 550w.
Do teh Memory test first as it is the simplest and doesn;t require tinkering with the hardware.

Memtest is running now, its about 65% through pass 3. So far 0 errors. If that ends up turning out okay, then I have a 5670 I can test out as well. That would at least help me rule out the mobo if possible, and have to decide between the GPU and PSU. Would a PSU still randomly cause blue screens regardless of power load?

That depends. PSUs are analog devices and are therefore difficult to evaluate compared to teh rest of a PC, where components pretty much either work or don't. This is the main reason why, if the PSU is not good and it could be the culprit for such behaviour, it most likely is. The rest of teh parts generally just fail catastrofically, with a few exceptions(RAM and storage).

Can you recommend me some quality power supplies that wont make me broke? And they don't need to be 750W as I don't need all of that, but at least in terms of models from brands. I'd appreciate the help.

Memtest came back with 0 errors. I will run the HD 5670 for a while and report back on my finding. Assuming I don't get another 3 days worth of false freedom. Thanks for the help so far.

Late response, but I had ordered an EVGA 750GQ on some prime day deal a few days after my last post for $55, but I had to wait for it to come back in stock. It came last weekend, so far from the amount of time I got to even use my PC since then, I've had no blue screen issues. So the issue was the PSU, and it is now resolved. Thanks guys.
