Hello again, @Danielle!

I'm sorry for the late reply. Have you tested the external using any diagnostic tool? You should be able to find the brand-specific utility on your HDD manufacturer's official website. There should also be a knowledge base article, explaining how to perform the diagnostic tests.
Unfortunately, this error could be indicating that the HDD migth has failed. If that is indeed the case, then you should definitely check the warranty on the product and send an RMA request to the manufacturer's customer support (if it's still covered). Otherwise, I'd advise you to simply replace the external HDD with a new one and always remember to keep at least one more copy of your data stored on a different drive as well.

Welcome to the community, @Danielle!

Can you please specify the error or the issue you encounter when you try to access your external hard drive's folders. Taking a screenshot and posting a link to it here might really help us assist you in the troubleshooting. I'd recommend you try the external HDD on another computer and see if you will be able to access the folder from there. If you get the error 'Access Denied', I'd advise you to try taking ownership of the HDD in Windows. You can refer to this tutorial for the step-by-steps on how to do that.

Hope it helps. Keep me posted with the details! :)

Hello again, @Danielle_28!

This looks pretty unfortunate! :( I'd strongly recommend trying to access the external from another computer and most importantly BACK UP all the data from it somewhere else before proceeding with the troubleshooting. Once you have it copied elsewhere, try running the HDD manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool or a third-party alternative to determine the health and SMART status of the hard drive.
I'd also suggest you try swapping the USB cable connecting it to your computer and also change the USB port.
Unfortunately, it's possible that the CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) error can also indicate internal hardware failure. :( If that is the case, I'd strongly recommend you use the assistance of a professional data recovery company! They are your best bet on getting your files back from the external hard drive.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting, though.
Good luck!

As I already mentioned, you would most probably need the assistance of a professional data recovery company if there are important files currently on the external drive that you wish to retrieve. Any data recovery attempts by yourself might cause more harm than good.

Let me know if you have more questions.
