I have a 1 TB My Passport, but do not know what kind of external adapter I could use/need to power it up (outside of USB ports), since I have tried USB, and my computer won't register it.

Thanks, and I've looked around, but have no idea what works best (due to budgetary concerns, I'm completely cautious/lost).

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(

So you have a portable WD My Passport right? If this is the case, then you need just a USB connection in order to power up the drive. Also, it may be a good idea to remove your serial number from the original post. :)

Have you tired using another USB cable? Have you attached the drive to another system? Is the device even powering up?

If the drive doesn't power up, even after being attached to another system with a different cable, then I'm afraid you don't have many options:
- RMA the drive in case it is under warranty. You can contact the place you got it from or WD's Support: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=nCtf2e
- Contact a data recovery...
