I just got one for $173
i could have got the GTX 970 for a little more, what is the major difference between them ?
was that a good deal i got?
Is the r9 290x a good gaming card?

It's an excellent gaming card. Stock it's about level with a stock 390 generally.

As for the 970, I've seen recently it hasn't aged as well with the 390, certainly in vram heavy stuff, higher res and dx12. BUT at 1080p dx11 the 290x, 390, 390x and 970 all trade blows depending on game and engine etc.

The 970 does all that with much less power draw.
