Welcome to the TH Community, @Heren_!

In addition to what @xFeaRDom recommended, I'd suggest you check how the external HDD appears if you plug it to the computer, using a different USB cable. If you have access to another laptop/PC, try the drive there as well and see how it will get recognized. I suspect that the cable might faulty if it takes too long for Windows Explorer/My Computer to detect it. You mentioned that you tested it using a diagnostic tool, can you share the SMART results with us?
It might also be a good idea to check how the hard drive is recognized in Disk Management in Windows.

Not too sure what you have on this disk, but i'll give a couple of recommendations.

Have you scanned the disk for any errors/issues using the built-in Microsoft software?

Have you de-fragged your disk, as this will (In simple terms) move all of the files that are saved in different areas together, and will allow it to be detected quicker?

Hi Heren,

Did you try plugging it in another laptop? What was the result? Do you have data on it after format? There are few solutions which worked for me and other people.

Method 1:
Go to disk management and see if your external HDD is assigned a drive letter? If it is not then assign, and restart your computer.

Method 2:
If you have large chunk of data in a folder, which might slow indexing, right clickon it click Properties --> Customize --> Optimize this folder for: (Select - General Items)

Method 3:
Try the below steps and check if that works.

a) Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive
b) Right mouse click on My Computer
c) Left click on Manage
d) Left click on Device Manager
e) Expand the USB list
f) Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (in my case it was the one that had no description)
g) Right mouse click - Uninstall
h) Turn off the external USB hard drive
i) Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver
j) It should work

If the drivers are not installed automatically install use the software disk that came along with the hard drive and install the drivers and software.
