Hello,
Dell E510 desktop PC.
I recently did a system image backup on my windows 7, 64 bit, Home Premium onto my external H.D. When I open up "My computer" it shows this external drive about 1/3 full [84gb] which is about correct. But when I hover over this file it says empty. When I open it it shows "0" bytes. How can there be such a dramatic difference here and where is my backup? How can one show that 84gb of space is being used and that file itself show empty? I left it sit a few days and same thing [maybe I was waiting for magic to happen [;-(
Thank you much,
Mike

Yes, use third-party disk imaging software for system backup. I used Windows Backup once and didn't like it so I got Active@ Disk Image, it's so reliable. Not free but worth every penny in my view: http://lsoft.net/diskimage.aspx

There are free disk imaging softwares I know, but I tried them all and didn't like how how they work or their limitations.
But if they suit you that's fine.

Hello jsmithepa,
Thank you for the response. I just plugged the ext HD in and it was recognized right away by Windows that it is there, and has 84gb of space being used. But when I open up Windows backup it says that "Windows could not find a backup for this computer". And again, checking the properties of the file show empty [well 4kb]. This is also not the first time I have had this happen but I've always blamed myself for disconnecting the HD improperly, etc, etc. But that is impossible now.

Someone at "Windows Seven" was advising others that this Windows backup program is very unreliable and recommended using Macrium Reflect which they said is always dependable.

So waddaya think?
Thanks so much,
Mike
