Hi Guys,
I think about last year, I opened up my computer from Dell and looked around. I saw this huge black box in it and opened it up. Then, I saw a chip in there. So, I took it out and it had all this stuff on it so I cleaned it up and put it back in. And before this, my computer has always be quiet and fast. So after I did that, I booted up my pc and it was LOUD! Really Loud! So I just figured out that I had scraped off the thermal compound. So, do you think, I should buy some new thermal compound for this?

Thanks,
Randy

Solution
It sounds like you have an old Dell BTX. Telling the model number would confirm this. You removed the cooling paste that transfers heat from the chip to the heatsink. iI should be cleaned and replced every time you remove that cover. Arctic Silver is a good brand but for normal use any thermal paste should work. It only takes a little in the middle of the chip. it will spread itself when you bolt the cover down. A small digonal X about a 1/4" wide works well. Be careful there are no wires under the cover when you bolt it down. You probably didn't hurt anything. It would have shut down if it got too hot. Those old Dells can make an impressive amount of noise whn they get hot.

From what I understand you cleared off the thermal compound and now the cpu can barely cool itself anymore. So if I were you get it quick because what you are doing now has a high risk of permanent damage due to overheating.

First thing's first here's the stuff i have found helpful in the past:
Clean the computer out and get rid of the dust (Makes fans loud because it can get hot then the PC Think's it's too hot)
Maybe it's just a age getting into it! Mine is 2 years old and does it already

Randy there's your answer! You kinda <LANGUAGE>it up. You took the thermal paste off and wiped it and now the Proccessor can't keep itself cool! Thermal paste keeps it cool and you have took it off! I reccomend getting someone to re do it as the more you use it it'll damage the proccessor!

MOD edit: watch the language
