Macchine was like new till I tried to install a 2g stick. It smoked and hurt theconnector as well. I was careful, but I felt the dell socket was awkward compared to my past success.
Now it shows a good 1g card as installed, but the other as empty no matter what.
Plan is to load w 2 gb stick and settle for that as max.
Q: Will the AMD style of RAM stick of 4Gb maybe 'Get a grip" and take me to 4Gb by some kind of luck?
Before I settle for so little can RAM be artifically inseminated somehow and so patch my burnout of my bad card connector?
It is w10 running 1gb RAM Would like the 4 but can do with the 2, since i crippled it so badly. The computer reports that bad connector asempty no matter what.

Crucial.com shows 2X2GB DDR2-800 as maximum memory. AMD memory is AMD only, and DDR3 won't work. Quite frankly I think you toasted your motherboard. You could probaly get a better Dell Optiplex or something different completely for about what it will cost to replace it. There are plenty of old Dells out there that support Core2 quads and 8-16 GB RAM including DDR3. A good one would be an Optiplex 755,760,780 in MT size. some old Dells require "low density RAM" but smoke isn't part of that problem. Look down in the slot and see if something got shoved down in there. I'm curious as to what kind of memory you installed.

I had a used 2gb module, it smoked on one chip. I do not know if i installed wrongly. Too late now. Seems one of the connector pins is now distorted, confirmed by crucial scan that shows one of the two rails as empty, w or wo module. Rail one accepts a 1 gb module and the pto330 is alive albiet a damaged mother board. I suppose I could give wife the 2gb system and she would never care. Really it surprises me how well it works w 1 gb and crippled. The new 2gb module should work pretty good. At least it is dual core that replaces the old box that was single.
I really am having a good old time learning of low density ddr2 and compatability w my intel system.
The only reason I am messing with this old machine is that it was given to me by a family member and in like new condition. I do not want to say it is harmed.. If You follow Captain Kirk, Recall he told Android Vega to spare his obsolete "carbon unit" , in that it serves a certain purpose as is.
Finally, in fact this box w 1gb works better than the single core w 3g ram.
The new box could have had 4 ram, but now only 2 max. Good enough nonetheless. I will keep this "defective carbon unit." She does not do complex activity!
Thanks for your good input.
