Do I need to change anything on my pc to upgrade to a new graphics card?

This is sort of a stupid question, but I just want to make sure I don't destroy my computer when I upgrade my gpu. I am only upgrading because I hope it will fix the lagging and random restarts and crashes. I built this computer about a year and a half ago, but started having issues this past month

I want to upgrade to:
MSI Nvidia GTX 1070.... I don't know which one is the best, amazon has many to chose from https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GXOX3SW/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza
Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 2400MHz PC3 19200 Desktop RAM, Red (Also, not really sure which one to chose from)

These are my specks now.

Intel i7 4790K @ 4.00GHz
Nvidia Geforce GTX 970
8GB Ram Corsair Vengeance 2x4
Samsung EVO 850 500gb (Only games are stored on it)
Corsair Air Vengeance 128GB (Only for my operation system, and a few small programs)
2TB HDD (for pictures, documents, and the backup for my whole pc. I also back up on two external drives as well)
Corsair Hydro H50 Liquid cooling system
MSI gaming 7 motherboard
power supply Corsair RM 850

Solution
IME it is often the case that you can't easily find out what is causing crashes using software diagnostics.

I find I have to swap out components (once I have tried to rule out driver or software related issues that might be causing a problem)

A graphics card overheating or a power supply issue will typically will manifest in games or other demanding applications but if it is happening all time you might want to try and do a complete reinstall of your operating system and see if that helps before buying new hardware.

Obviously it ids often a help to have spare components you can swap out to try and isolate a problem, but most people don't have that luxury.

But it only crashes and restarts during game play. Its fine otherwise and the power supply is the corsair RM850

Sounds like something similar I am going through. In my case, I changed my psu and it didnt fix it. You might be lucky and your graphics card is just overheating and a nice clean out could do it some good? Maybe re-position some fans to blow the heat from it and leave the case open while playing to see if the restarts continue?

It's not overheating though. I have a program that monitors the heat on each individual component in my pc. The gpu stays around 36° C, and the highest temp, 56°, was during gameplay of a graphic intense game that was also modded. I am so confused. I ran diagnostics on every and nothing showed up... so why my pc restarts randomly even when using ms word, lags and crashes during gameplay is a mystery to me. I also have a corsair hydro h50 and two other large fans so cooling isn't a issue.

I know it has to be the psu. I disconnected everything from it, then reconnected it and now it stopped restarting. It's either the wires or the psu that is bad.

Though the only error showing up when it did restart was something to do with the rzwixard. I posted a question about that but never got a reply.

If it starts restating again I'll just replace the psu and go from there. And by restating I meant it turns off and then back on sometime later, or sometimes not at all. It's not stating it's restarting. It got so bad to where it was stuck in a loop of on/off/on/off and I had to unplug it to get it to stop. Which is why is discounted the psu from everything

At the end of the day a new PSU / quality second hand PSU is not a bad buy in a situation liek yours.

If the replacement PSU solves the problem you are golden and if it doesn't you can return, resell or keep it as a useful spare (unlike some other parts you could end up buying only to find they are not the problem)
