I have old pc, planning to upgrade my vga card only

i7 950
12 gb corsair trip ch
msi gtx460
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R

only have money for vga card only for now......

i play overwatch Medium Settings for 50-60 FPS
if i change my vga card to RX480, can it run Epic Settings for atleast 80 FPS?
Powercolor RX480 any good? because its the cheapest RX480 card lol

Solution

3gb version is quite a bit slower and has only 3gb. Still on par with a GTX 970 at least, so it's not bad, though you should not pay a cent over $199.99 considering the 1060 can be had for $249.99

1) the 1060 is faster.
2)the 480 would have to oced to 1420mhz to reach the potetioal of the 1060.
3)the 1060 will have better/optimized and faster driver develpment.
4)it will also be OC capable and to push it even futher to the limits.
5)1060 will have more community support as well including hardware suport such as future waterblock in addition to a plethora of better vendors with OC right out the gate to chose from with better avalibility and higher-end binning. e.g evga OC FTW, XFX, strix and so on.

Ignore the above, there's a much simpler answer:

-The 480 REQUIRES UEFI, which your motherboard does not support. The GTX1060 on the other hand doesn't require UEFI (though even that might not be compatible if your motherboard's firmware doesn't do the PCIe handoff correctly)

480 will work, they have switches for legacy bios in the worst case scenario, as for the nvidia 1060,1070,1080's, they "should" work, with the latest bios, for the boards have worked fine, seeing as your board is a x58 that is nvidia SLI approved im pretty sure it would work.
I would not let it stop me from upgrading my graphics, worst case is you return it / or you keep it;because, you will have to update your entire system(mobo, cpu, ram) anyway either or.

You do realize that thread says the OPPOSITE right? In fact, I can't find any UEFI switch mention nor photographic evidence of one! The reference card definitely doesn't have one, and no forum threads anywhere (or reviews) talk about one (but do talk about it for earlier models like the 290). In fact, some cards specifically stated "(UEFI)" in their model numbers

If you can find evidence of a 480 with full support for non-uefi systems I would be very interested in seeing it (I don't like saying "avoid this" or "avoid that" if there's a valid option that works)

"After a bios update (from F11 in the year 2012, to F20 in the year 2014) the card worked fine.

Hopefully this will help others."

but hey if it doesn't work then i guess you will never, update your PC again (not like i mentioned that)so you should just toss the whole thing according to my friend here. i concur, fuck it, toss it, can't update shit. cause it will blow so dont even try, think,or look at it. enjoy your rig. becareful.

shit -1 ( cant vote myself down so go ahead and minus 2 that for me)thanks

I will have to remind you that you were not paying attention to the actual contents of that post you claim was the proof. The person there clearly stated a Gigabyte ga-x79-ud3, which is a UEFI based bios and that fact is clearly mentioned several times in the Gigabyte product page. I would still love to proof of compatibility with older, traditional bios motherboards so I won't have to tell madfenix that his preferred choice is impossible due to motherboard incompatibility.

u all confusing me lol

so i just want to ask: if i buy 1060 GTX will it run full potential 100%

or it will have performance issue like only running at 90%

i mustly just want to play overwatch at Epic MAX Setting 1080P atleast 80-100 FPS

with my pc now i can only High with 30-60 FPS

1) Your CPU would likely be the limiting factor in that configuration
2) It should be able to handle max settings at 1080p, BUT your cpu might limit you to well less than 100fps
3) If your monitor is 60Hz, no sense in bothering with 100fps, all you'll get is tearing

ill only have 60hz monitor FOR NOW (maybe update next year)
so i should prob can get most game played at 1080P with max setting with 60 FPS? im happy with that lol
as long i dont get any lag what so ever

When you get a new monitor, then consider upgrading your CPU. For now the 1060 should be a fine addition and several times faster than your ancient 460

Lag is completely unrelated, if you have high ping now the GPU won't fix that!
