Hello all!
It's been quite a few years since i've upgraded my PC (2012) and it's beginning to show its age so I have a few question regarding what I plan to do. I have no idea what current pairings are and since I have no really experimented with intel CPUs I have no idea on how each generation compares other than what research has allowed me.

Current Setup

CPU: AMD FX 8350 Vishera
GPU: HD 7950
RAM: 16GB DDR3

I would greatly prefer the 6600K over the 4690k since i am already AMD and having to switch over will require new/compatible parts. And if I'm correct the 6600k, though slight, is better than the 4690k.

Upgrading to the 6600K and the nuances of having to overhaul my system is no issue.
I really would like to upgrade to a 980TI. My current GPU is beginning to slow down and drops frames during extended gameplay (probably dying).

If possible I would love to keep the 8350FX and pair it with a 980TI ( or equivalent performing card), but I have been reading that pairing a 980TI to an 8350 FX could be a bottleneck.

Games I plan to play :

Mafia III
FFXIV
Gears of War
WatchDogs 2
(probably more!)

FFXIV will be played the MOST as it is an mmo x). For all interests my main desire is to play only a few current gen titles / future releases and focus on FFXIV.

Should I keep AMD and pair it with the best performing card?
Is my best option to upgrade to 4960K for my interests only?
Or is 6600k a good choice to for for current and future releases?

Solution
A i5 6600k is much more powerful than the FX 8350, but it will cost alot to also replace the motherboard and Ram. Do not get a 980 ti, get a GTX 1070, its alot faster than the 980 ti. An FX 8350 will definitely bottleneck a card like the GTX 1070.

 Thanks for telling me about the 1070 I will definitely be getting that instead since they are literally the same price :d.

If you get the i5 6600k you will also need a good aftermarket air cooler to overclock it, if you could get an air cooler now, like the Cryorig H7, overclock the hell out of your FX 8350, and it should give you some better performance. Keep in mind Kaby Lake and AMD's Zen should be released in only a few months, so i just get the cooler for the FX 8350 and get one of those processors later on. As you stated previously, you really want to keep the processor.
