Less than one year old and my pre-built is fried! Can you help me pick out new parts? (Cyberpower)

Hello there. A few months ago my PC stopped working and I've been saving up money in order to repair it. The issue that occurred was one time I turned on my PC, it sounded like it booted up but none of the USBs worked(mouse/keyboard) and I got nothing from the display. The fan started up but I couldn't get anything else working. Previous to this, the USB ports would quit working intermittently and a strange electronic sound would emit from inside the case...

I brought in my PC for diagnostic a few weeks ago, and the tech was able to determine that the motherboard wasn't sending electrical signals, and that CPU had a 50% of being fried as well. It kind of sounds like a need to replace both.

I'm looking to replace the MOBO and I will more than likely need a new CPU as well. I am not entirely savvy at picking out parts and do you guys have recommendations based off my specs for a new CPU+MOBO combo? Can I go Intel? My price range is roughly $300-400.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

It's not only taht you can go Intel, it's taht you absolutely should. Also, you will be needing a proper PSU so this doesn't happen again ;)

And new RAM. It's worth it to switch to DDR4 to get teh latest gen Intel. It's cheap.

This looks amazing. Is the RAM absolutely required? I am putting this on the credit card so I am looking to trim the fat money-wise if possible. I agree on a new PSU. I think that may have prompted the issue to begin with as the reviews haven't been stellar.

Unless you fried the CPU with a very bad overclock then most likely it was your crappy PSU that killed the PC.
Pre-built's almost never come with good quality PSUs, they use the number printed on the sticker as a selling point, not any actual quality, and thermaltake is pretty well known to not have very good PSUs

No overclocking done. Everything was left at stock clock speed.

Yuck. My family has spent over 5 grand with Cyberpower and have now run into a lot of issues. They have lost us as customers. Though, most of the blame falls on me for not looking into this stuff. I think I will be ordering those parts listed above tonight and having a pro install them just to ensure that if anything else is wrong it is noticed. I imagine these intel chips also run a lot cooler - anything need to be done to the cooling end of things on my PC?

The issue with a lot of people that order from cyberpower is threy pick out good quality parts then skimp on the psu and wonder why they have issues. Cyberpower is a company that will buils what you order. If you had built the pc your self and ordered a crappy psu and had issues who would you blame then. Like any company that builds pcs you have to do your due dilligence on the parts you order from them. If not thats mostly your fault not the company that built the system. Could cyberpower or ibuy power or any of them do better probably you have to remember they didn't tell you to buy a thermaltake psu and they did offer high end psus that you chose not to include.

No I agree. The onus is on me - though this was one of their 'Prebuilt' deals. Nevertheless I have learned my lesson, albeit an expensive one.

Hopefully you can still use some of the parts from you current system. You have to remember the psu is the heart of the system going for a crappy one may work for a while but in the end you will have loads of head and heart ache.

Yeah teh RAM is needed. You could get an i3. Still better than what you had adn it will serve you well with gaming:

It's not so much 'skimping' on the PSU, but rather selecting the CyberPower default "standard" PSU.
Which is actually substandard, as the OP here has discovered.
