I can't decide if I should go X99 for a new build so I am here asking for opinions.

So to start off with I have a pretty big budget to work with as I want to build a dream computer.

What I am going to do with this PC is primarily gaming but also content creation such as Youtube videos (Let's play type deals) or streaming also occasionally editing videos for friends and family (which I do as a side job).

However, the primary focus of this PC is gaming because I have always wanted to build an immensely powerful PC that will crush any games I throw at it for awhile to come. I don't, however, know if X99 platform will be right for this.

I have a pretty big budget but If possible would like to keep the budget around $3000 but am willing to go a bit higher if necessary.

I would love any advice from the more knowledgeable people around here and also if you would like to share builds using PCpart picker x99 that would also be very welcome.

The extra cores with an x99 build may benefit for video encoding, though the 6700k is no slouch either. The extra cores may assist with streaming. In terms of gaming, the more cores typically the lower speed of the cpu and as more cores are added heat becomes a more important factor and overclocking may be more hit and miss.

The extra pci lanes aren't really much benefit since a single high performance gpu is preferable. Going beyond 2 way sli unless there's a specific reason with benefit to do so (rare) is hardly worth it. Multiple gpu scaling for gaming reaches a point of diminishing returns rather quickly past 2 gpus and can become problematic and in some games may not benefit them at all. 2 way sli can be done on z170 just fine...

There are only two reasons to get an X99 platform that I can think of.

#1 You want more than 4 cores.

For games, you don't need this, and for what I can tell from your description, you wont need it for production either. So I think a regular i7-6xxxK is for you based on this.

#2 Dem PCI lanes

With the X99 platform you can get more x16 PCI slots (Using x16 channels), but it is arguable that this won't matter either. Right now, the best you can get is two Titan X in SLI. I don't have the numbers, and maybe somebody can help me out, but I don't believe a Titan X will saturate a x8 PCI 3.0 channel. So if you get a nice Z107 board that has at least an x8/x8 PCI setup, you should be fine. The Skylake i7 has plenty of PCI lanes for this. I am assuming you are not going to load a bunch of PCI hardware into this rig, as most people don't, so coorect me if that is not true.

In conclusion: X99 is for specific professional applications and epeen. Mostly, you don't need to get it.

errr, justasii, i hope you know that there is only 1 cpu what will fit the i7 6xxxk cpu, its the 6700k, haha, well on the other note i think you meant a i7 6xxx X series cpu which yes, will be great for gaming and even better for content creation. and i would completely disagree with your idea of saying the x99 is for professionals , I would say that the xeons are cor professionals that need those extra cores to render videos really fast or something to do with their ram or extra cache or ram. well on the other hand the x99 for the people who want to take their systems to their extreme with like 4 way sli or quad channel ram or just for people who wana game and do content creation at the same time. and the dual titan XP isnt the best setup you can get today, it is still the quad Titan X (maxwell) but i dont think you want to put in that money for that

Quad channel ram doesn't do much for real world apps over dual channel ram.

In other words many of the features of x99 aside from running intel cpu's with greater than 4 cores are minimal.

And yes of course, I completely agree with you, but i have stated that Those features are ment for people going with "extremes" with their pc with unnessary stuff like you stated, Quad channel ram, 4 way sli, extra pcie lanes, and extra cache
