I was changing settings in my Nvidia control panel when I came across a program that the default graphics processor was set to the global setting "auto-select: Nvidia GPU. However, I also had the option to change it to use "High-performance Nvidia processor". So I was wondering if changing between the two had any effect video performance in games and things like that. I have a GTX 960m.

That selects Intel HD or nvidia GPU to be used unless specified otherwise. Best left to "Auto-select". You'll save some battery. Games will be ran on nVidia GPU (Witcher, League of Legends or any demanding, games like Half-Life or any not so demanding game will default to Intel HD) . Other programs will run on Intel HD.
