So this is my second build ever. Had an absolute blast building my first pc which was a prepackaged bundle. This one ive been buying everything on my own. I started collecting components piece by piece as they go on sale for a while now. I am hoping to have everything I need so I can build it before my last semester of college starts in a few weeks.

I need your guys input on a few things that are questionable. Mainly the PSU and the cpu cooler. I basically got the PSU for free, otherwise I would have wanted to go a bit higher on the wattage. Do you think that 430W will cut it? Judging by the wattage estimate on pcpartspicker I should be good but what if I want to do some very mild overclocking? Can that cpu cooler handle some overclocking too?

Also the case I just ordered comes with 5 case fans. The ones I added are not necessarily the exact ones ill have but it looks like it comes with 1 200mm and 4 120mm so I guessed on them.

Very excited to start building again. I hope going with the 4gb rx470 instead of the 8gb is okay too... How do you guys think I did for my first gaming build? Everything is still unopened so I can probably exchange something if I screwed up bad enough hehe. I ended up right around $600 for my final cost which is right where I wanted to be for my max budget. Thanks guys! :D

Here are 4 good options. I like the EVGA the least out of the 4 though.

and here are 4 more slightly more expensive

You have a 6600k but an rx 470? You would be much better off getting an i3-6100 and an rx 480/nvidia 1060.
Maybe getting a mini ITX motherboard as well for $60 or so, so you could get that rx 480 and still keep your processor. Just some ideas I suppose.
Same thing last guy said. Not a good SSD.
I return stuff all the time, you shouldn't have too big of an issue of any of these things are something you'd like to do.

(thermaltake smart series) Are rated, straight up under "bad". Most people would heavily advice on not overclocking anything on that rig.

With $600 you can get so much more, these parts aren't verry wise.

thanks for input everyone. pretty inexperienced so I figured I would need some tweaking haha. although that's not the actual prices I paid for everything. got the mobo for $75 from microcenter along with the 6600k for $200. the non k was $20 less so I figured why not go with the k and have OC capability down the road if I feel I need the extra boost.

rx470 was $200. I was looking at the 1060 as well but after looking at the benchmarks it didn't seem quite worth the rather significant price increase for the not as significant performance increase

cant return the power supply cause it was free. Was probably going to jump to 500W. Wont be overclocking right off the bat.

Guess it might help to know my main uses for this will be photoshop and 1080 gaming (which is why I think the rx470 will do just fine). I want this build to last a while

oops sorry I also forgot to mention that it is NOT a thermalake psu, it is a EVGA. It didnt show up on parts picker so I just picked a different 430 with a "plus" certification. I was not so much concerned with the brand as much as 430W not being enough wattage (not to mention the poor certification)

Samer....
May I ask why you do this on every thread?
I've already told you twice about the differences between the RX 480 and the 1060, and what makes one justified over the other at the current market position.
Performance isn't everything, the 30% cost increase on the GTX 1060 doesn't make it worth the 5-10% performance improvement over the RX 480 at the moment.
Its like with TFLOPS on the budget build/console thread, just because it has more doesn't mean it will necessarily perform better. (E.g. PS3 vs GTX 750ti)
Last time I tried to correct you on that specific topic, you stormed off and unfollowed the thread after being disproven. :(
Same deal with the SSDs.
Best thing to do is to just learn from it and move on. ;)

So you think I'm okay with the rx470? that was something I was going back and forth in my head the longest with. I was eyeing up the rx480 but seeing as none of these new graphics cards are in stock atm I just happened to come across the msi rx470 so I pulled the trigger while I had the chance. Really wanted the msi version because I like the looks of it and ill have a window on my case so it will be visible. I know the rx480 is a step up but I don't know if its worth waiting around to maybe getting a chance at buying it.

Also cant I just crossfire my rx470 down the road if need be? (I know id need a MUCH better psu to do that although I honestly know nothing about crossfiring)

The RX470 will perform very similarly to the RX480 at a lower price, still a good purchase. :)
You CAN crossfire your RX480s, so no worries there.
Honestly, there is enough voltage there to be able to crossfire them on paper, but again, the power supply is so low quality that i'd just bite the bullet and get a Seasonic S12II 520w if I were you. :(
Costs $58, but well worth it to make sure your components don't get fried.

sorry I disagree :)

have a nice day :)

......It's not a matter of disagreeing, its a matter of statistical fact.
This is what annoys me, in the face of hard facts you ignore everything and go with what you think, which is just incorrect...
Spreading false information isn't exactly how you get better at solving people's problems, if you truly want to help people out and get them the best solution possible, accept that you're wrong and learn from it.

okay okay how about this? EVGA 750 GQ, 80+ GOLD 750W, Semi Modular, EVGA ECO Mode, 5 Year Warranty, Power Supply

I know it is also an EVGA but this one has MUCH better reviews, is gold rated, and is currently $54

also the 750 Watt Thermaltake Toughpower TPD-0750M 80 Plus Gold Certified Semi-Modular Power Supply is on sale for the same price. That one requires a MIR to get it down to the same price as the EVGA which is why I'm leaning towards the EVGA right now.

Are these psu companies just bad all around or just those specific 430W units? are these 750W gold rated units units a better choice?

Actually I found 1 more after searching for some good deals.

CORSAIR CX series CX600 600W 80 PLUS BRONZE Active PFC is currently at $37 after MIR. I know corsair is a reputable brand. This deal ends today so I'm gonna need to pull the trigger on this if this is the one.

I'm sure that 600W would be plenty for my needs already. Is it really worth the $20 to get a gold rating instead of bronze? it looks like the main difference is efficiency. What do you think about these guys here?

why don't you like the EVGA exactly? from what I briefly read it can be noisy at higher levels of operation but it has a passive mode at lower loads. Since I will be drawing such lower loads wouldn't I be in the passive mode for most of the time? Also say I wanted to crossfire and/or overclock down the road isn't it good to have that extra wattage?

From what ive read the Seasonics are always a solid choice as well

okay cool, just wondering. I think I'm ready for building then. I'm happy with what I have and still have room for upgrades down the road. I'm going on a little vacation in a few days so wont have time to actually build it but it should be done in about 2 weeks. When everything is up and running ill post back here with my finished build.... or questions as to why or how I screwed something up lol!

Thank you to all that have answered you've all been helpful. Great community here with extremely quick responses. I'm sure ill be back with any other component questions and hopefully ill be able to contribute some down the road when I actually learn what the heck I'm doing :p

The GQ is a great value power supply for the money, but it isn't all that great compared to the Seasonics etc.
I was held up on this in another thread, but I still personally believe it to be a good investment if you're on a budget.
Still, either the Seasonic S12II, M12II or one of the other power supplies listed will serve you better, but for less watts per $ in terms of value.
