Hey everybody, I'm at my wit's end here and just want to get this fixed. I'm going to dump as much info as I can think of so that anything can be of help.

My speakers

I recently moved into my college dorm and just unpacked my desktop today. When I plugged in my speakers, they play at a very low volume even though the volume on both the computer and the speaker's volume controller are maxed out. The speakers' volume controller has no effect on the sound, and the speakers continue to play even if the power button is turned off. If the speakers are unplugged from their little controller, the sub-woofer plays at what sounds like the appropriate volume.

The small speaker controller connects to both small speakers on one end, and the other end splits into two wires, one going to the sub-woofer and the other is the jack. If it is plugged into my ASUS monitor [which is connected to my desktop by HDMI], the 'Playback devices' tab doesn't show that speakers are plugged in, but they still play at low volume. If they are plugged into the back of my desktop, they continue to play at low volume but show up in 'Playback devices' as speakers.

If I plug earbuds into the monitor then sound still plays from the speakers. if I replace the speakers in the back of my desktop with earbuds then it plays at a low volume; same if I plug into the front of the desktop. If I plug the speakers into my phone and play something, it comes out at a low volume.

All of this worked while I was at home, and I already tried the setup I had at home. My desktop works perfectly fine so i'm pretty sure it's not a problem with that, however I do not have another set of speakers to try with it nor do I have the ability to buy any. I have my laptop with me as well, so I could possibly try the speakers on that, but it is currently 12 in the morning and I just can't right now. I think it might be a problem with the speakers (perhaps they got damaged somehow during the trip though they were protected), given that they played audio from my phone at a low volume.

Any and all suggestions are welcome and I really hope this can be worked out with all your help.
