Rear I/O panel USB 3.0 ports failing around boot up, sometimes later

I built a gaming computer a little under 2 years ago, and it hasn't given me any real problems until just recently. I'm using the MSI Z97 GAMING 7 motherboard, which has 8 rear I/O USB 3.0 ports. They've developed a nasty habit of simply ceasing to function, sometimes during boot up to the desktop, sometimes 10 minutes later. Sometimes they all go at once, and sometimes just one of the few that are being used goes. After failing, and upon looking at my Device Manager, nothing seems out of place in the USB controller section. Under any other category, say 'audio inputs and outputs', the USB 3.0 device simply disappears from the list. Perhaps it's not noteworthy, but I also have two front USB 3.0 ports, both function normally.

I have performed the best google-foo I could muster, and I haven't come across anyone else with this particular issue. There are plenty of forum posts about ceased functionality from the front USB 3.0 ports which are connected internally to the port on the board, via a cable, but that's not my issue.

I'm assuming Occam's razor here, and that the simplest explanation is that my rear USB 3.0 ports are slowly but definitively dying, and it's perhaps time to buy a new motherboard. However before I resign my wallet to such a fate, I thought I'd look here for a second opinion.

As part of the motherboard's UEFI BIOS, there is an interactable graphic of the motherboard, however I don't think I can see functionality information for the USB 3.0 ports. Even if I could, this issue happens after logging into my desktop.

Thanks for any help or advice!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that if a USB goes, a simple shutdown and restart wont suffice to bring it back to functionality, I need to cycle the actual power supply. It's only when the motherboard does a hard reset that it restores those ports.

Your ports are most probably in short circuit, that's the reason for the failure. What is the wattage of your PSU? What processor are you running? What is your GPU? Maybe there isn't enough power for the USB ports.

Update: Also, do you hear any strange noises coming from the PSU?

Hi there, sorry for the delay. My PSU is the Corsair HX850i, my CPU is an i7-4770K, and I run 2 GPUs, both Nvidia (980 and a 770). Though I have 8 slots, only 3 of them are ever used; webcam, bluetooth headseat dongle, and my mouse, which has a couple lights on it. As far as I can tell, my power supply sounds normal enough, that is, for a 2 year old computer.

If the problem is that my PSU can't support 3 usb devices in addition to the other computer components, then the PSU must be failing, because this issue is only around 2 months old.

Hey thanks for the response. I disabled my XCHI hand off a long time ago, because when I first built the computer, I couldn't use the rear USB ports, they just simply did not exist in my device manager. I eventually discovered that solution, and my rear USBs started working! They've been fine, up until this current issue. I'll try enabling and disabling again.
