Looking to upgrade my rig (primarily gaming)

Hi everyone! (sorry for the wall of text).

I've been researching the current hardware offerings that are available and I'm not sure what to do, this is my current PC build:

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4GHz Socket AM3+ 8MB Cache.
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 Socket AM3+ 7.1 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard.
RAM: HyperX Savage 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) 1600 MHz DDR3 CL9 DIMM XMP Memory Module.
Graphics Card: Zotac GeForce GTX 980Ti AMP Edition 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card.
PSU: Cooler Master Vanguard V850W 80+ Gold Fully Modular PSU.

I built this system in April 2013 (with the exception of the 980Ti) and I've got the mindset now that I want to upgrade the CPU. I can run every game I currently play on it fine and regularly get 50+ fps until I do something that is CPU-intensive or use my second screen and it takes a hit performance wise. It's not often that happens, but I have been thinking since Skylake's release whether to upgrade my system or not as games are starting to utilise more cores/hyperthreading.

I know that I'd have to buy an after market cooler, motherboard and memory alongside a new cpu if I want to make the switch to Intel but I was wondering whether I should wait until Zen and Kaby Lake release later this year. I've been mainly looking at the 6600k and the 6700k with my thoughts on Star Citizen and its system requirements, as I don't want to be running it on below medium graphical settings.

I've read up and heard that the 6600k is better value for money, however the extra cores/threads the 6700k has is making me second guess myself as it may help improve performance in games such as Star Citizen. I already have a cooler, motherboard and RAM picked out but I'm second guessing myself as to whether to upgrade now or wait and see if Zen/Kaby Lake has better performance and/or is better value for money.

TL: DR

Should I upgrade my current system to a 6600k or 6700k or should I wait for Zen/Kaby Lake release.

Thanks to everyone in advance!

honestly the only time the i7 will have an advantage over the 6600k is when you are either streamlining while playing games or you do a lot of rendering, if neither of these situations apply to you do as I did and just get the I5-6600k its a fantastic processor.

upgrade to skylake would be my suggestion, Kaby lake is only going to be a tiny increase over skylake and it will be on the same socket. I wouldn't hold my breath for Zen either, it could potentially be good but AMD has hyped up their cpu's before just for them to flop. We know Skylake preforms well in gaming and multitasking so there is no reason to wait.

Thanks for the quick reply! :)

Which Skylake processor would you suggest though based on my concerns, the 6600k or the 6700k?
I'm predominantly thinking of the 6700k solely because of the higher thread count and cache but would it be worth the extra cash?
