I installed a heat sink into my computer and now it won't boot up. The cpu fan and the chassis fan both work as well as the cd drive. I checked all the wiring and tried turning it on with no hard drives, as well as checked to see if it was just the monitor. No bent cpu pins and no audible beeps for me to go by.

I'm assuming when you put the new heatsync on, you cleaned off the old CPU grease and put new CPU grease on, right? The CPU fan is connected to the CPU fan power on the mobo?

Yeah I cleaned it up put new paste on, there is no grease on the mother board. Fan is plugged in where it is suppose to be.

I can twist it a bit. Should it be tighter?

It should be as tight as you can go w/o damaging the mobo. Don't superman tighten it, but it should be snug to where it doesn't move around. It needs a good seal to prevent overheating, which will only cause problems in the future as well.

Another suggestion is to make sure to take out all your RAM, video card, ect and reseat them. It's possible a bump could have moved them. More than likely you're fine but it wouldn't' hurt. If you don't mind losing some BIOS settings (and you remember them if you changed them) try taking the battery out of the CMOS and reset the CMOS so that it goes back to default for now. If you took the processor out, something screwy could have updated there. You never know and it wouldn't hurt to try.

Also check to see if you accidently disconnected the 4-8pin CPU power or MB power. It happens too :).

I will certainly try all that and get back to you!

Update: No luck resetting everything. Thinking I may have shorted the mobo with the new screw mounts that came with the heatsink. So I have a new mobo on the way so i can test all my components and if the mobo is not the problem then I have a spare case so I will just build a second computer for the wife while I figure out mine.

It is exactly as I thought, I shorted out my motherboard. Took awhile but I finally got a new one and it works perfect. So I guess this will be a cautionary tale about being careful mounting an after market heat sink and shorting the motherboard with the screw mounts.
