Hi, im going to build a new pc for gaming soon but im not completely sure what is better, Dual Channel or Quad Channel. Here are some specs:

Motherboard: MSI Z170a Gaming M3
Processor: I5-6600K
Videocard: MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X
Power supply: Cooler master V 550 Watt

Thanks!

Ok so that makes sense. Do not bother with 2400mhz memory then, the H170 can only support up to 2133mhz. You need a Z170 to use anything over 2133mhz.

The only consumer motherboards that run in Quad Channel right now are X99 based boards.

Even though your motherboard has 4 DIMM slots they are paired and only run in dual channel. So if you want to get say 32gb of ram your best bet is to buy a pair of 16gb dimms, there is no performance advantage to buying a quad channel kit, and in fact it leaves all your slots full eliminating any chance of a future memory upgrade without replacing everything.

If you are buying a 6600k you should stick with the Z170 motherboard, otherwise you cannot overclock it. Thats the whole point of getting a k processor.
