GTX 580 to GTX 960? Pros and cons of upgrading?

I can upgrade from a GTX 580 1.5GB to a GTX 960 2 GB very cheaply. Can sell my 580 for $90 and pick up a 960 for $120 CAD. I've heard the GTX 960 is a pretty underwhelming card though. But my GTX 580 runs hot in my case with very little airflow, still I get a decent overclock with this card. The GTX 960 I heard runs pretty cool. In terms of performance though, what can I expect upgrading?

Currently I run DOOM between High and Ultra settings at around 40 FPS with dips into the 30 FPS when the game gets busy. Can I expect smooth 60 FPS 1080P performance going with the GTX 960? Also my GTX 580 doesn't support Vulkan API, only Open GL. Would going from Open Gl to Vulkan make a huge difference?

And how does the GTX 960 overclock?

its not that big of an upgrade from your current card. And on quite a few games it wont hit on 60fps at 1080p. Also it be worth adding some intake fans to your case if your getting little airflow.

I have to agree the upgrade isnt really there, except for the vram the performance difference wont be noticeable especially with the overclock, I had a 580 lightning and a gtx 670 PE which is about as fast as the 960 less so now with driver improvements. There was really very little in the way of speed improvements between my two cards. I kept the 670 due to the additional ram

there would not be a noticeable performance difference. Vulkan right now really hasn't done anything for anyone. It provided a small increase in performance in the 1 game that supports it (doom) and only on some cards and it wasn't a huge increase for most cards.

Oh I thought Vulkan was in more things. DOOM is actually one of the only newer games I played, save for No Man's Sky which runs like ass (which is probably more of the game than the card).

Is there a possibility my performance would go down on a 960 from a 580?

you may want to wait there is a 1060 3 gig comming out its listed for 219 euros at the moment. But should be available in us/ can soon. If your not in a super hurry it might pay to wait until the price is released. if your budget is less though i guess a 960 would be better but i would look for a 4gig version.

Its likely worth it for 30 dollars yes, but believe me when I say this it wont be night and day, getting support for newer games will be worth it though.

Unless you use the graphics card for compute functions.... The 580 is really a very powerful card, even when compared to todays gaming cards, this is likely become less true as software catches up to the hardware, I suppose I just have a soft spot for the 580 and 570 they were simply amazing gpus where compute functions were concerned.

Yeh I'm quite impressed with the GTX 580 as well. But this is a really good deal I am seeing on the GTX 960. It makes sense to jump on it.

What kind of compute functions do you mean that the GTX 580 is good at???
