Hello,

I'm setting up a new build running windows 8.1: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/jaysparts/saved/QYWYcf

After assembling it, I plugged in a WD 2TB USB3.0 Disk Drive into the front panel USB3.0 port and I heard repeated plugin/unplug audio alerts and the disk icons appeared/disappeared - sometimes with a questionmark. I found this thread that describes the problem: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/787bf77d-33af-4ab3-8d8a-cd43007ad747/usb-3-instability-issues-windows-81-windows-8-the-usb-3-stack-is-unstable-on-multiple-pcs-and?forum=w8itprohardware

Questions; Is there a fix for this? Is this motherboard specific (I don't see this on my 4770K machine with MSI mobo)?

Any help would be appreciated!!

Solution
I don't know if it is too late to answer the question, but I had a similar issue with my Asus X99-A setup.

I found out that in UEFI BIOS front panel USB 3.0 port "charging function" was turned off. When I turned it on it started to work properly. + I also reinstalled the drives from ASUS support section, which turned out to be different from those that Windows 10 chose by default (as you already tried).
Hi there dynaperspective,

Have you tried to attach the drive to the ports on the back, which are directly attached to the MOBO? In case the drive works just fine over there, then I would suggest you to double check the connection of the front panel.
In case the issue persists, it may be a good idea to contact the computer case's Support on that. There could be something wrong with the front panel.

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Hello,

Actually... I think I've got it fixed. I installed a beta HostController from the Asus website and it seems to have fixed the problem. Pretty annoying that I've still got 2 USB3.0 ports in the back that don't work. At least I can plug my portable drive in the front with the original single cable and it work. Progress...

Now if I can figure out why my Acronis boot disk doesn't work. I've always used Acronis so I'm hesitant to use the built-in windows backup function...

Thanks for the reply...

D

Spoke too soon!! Still messed up. I guess that's consistent with the thread I linked above that says USB3.0 instability. I'll ping Asus support but last time I called them they just told me to reinstall the OS the they'd issue an RMA. Somehow, I don't think sending the mobo back would make any difference. Maybe not... who knows. Sheesh... it might be a setting in the bios - it's gonna take me quite a while to go through it. It seems very (very) complicated.
