Hi

I am building a computer for 3D animation/rendering, photo and video editing. I was wondering 'is single core performance important for those tasks' if so, what CPU is best for those tasks that is under $400. preferably under $350 but I can spare the $50 if it is important.

Update: If possible please can the CPU also have ECC. the reason being that the computer will be up for long amounts of time thus increasing chances for a crash to happen.

Thanks

Or buy a used 3930K and build yourself a 6-core setup. Means having fun hunting for relevant parts, but the end result will be a much more powerful system. A 3930K here in the UK went this week for 72 UKP on eBay (is that over $100? Not sure), and I usually run 3930Ks at 4.8GHz for pro builds (doing three atm, 32GB RAM @ 2400MHz, Quadro K5000 and 6000, new 2TB Enterprise SATA obtained cheap via auction, SSDs, etc. The 3930Ks cost me between 95 UKP and 145 UKP, though one of them is actually a 3970X come to think of it)

I also managed to get a 4960X for an excellent price recently (item 112027937171), and a top-end ASUS P9X79-E WS mbd to go with it which was about 200 UKP, for my own editing system. I did buy the RAM new (GSkill TridentX/2400 32GB), but the GPUs were also good used deals (Quadro 6000 6GB and two GTX 580 3GB for extra CUDA, way more potent than a modern 1080 for 64bit CUDA).

Either way, good luck!

Oh, if you're using the system for AE, I can advise more specifically on suitable choices.

Ian.
