How to get Windows to boot from my SSD instead of my HDD?

I find this problem to be almost laughable. I have an mSata 250 gb ssd from samsung with windows on it. If I boot with just the ssd installed, there are no problems whatsoever.

When I add an EMPTY 1TB HDD, it becomes impossible to boot. It's EMPTY, yet still somehow it prioritizes the HDD above the SSD.

There's nothing to change in the boot order. It just says "OS Boot Manager".

Anybody has any clue on how to fix this?

Should anyone ever have the same problem, I fixed it by removing the HDD (so windows can boot regularly with the SSD). Then, while the laptop was powered on, I removed the back and plugged in the HDD while holding the SSD in place with my pinky. Then I turned it into sleep mode and when I returned, it recognized the harddrive and I quickly created a partition for it. Now it works perfectly !

I've been hammering on this problem for about a week now, if the solution was in the bios I would've found it by now. The bios sees both drives but they are not listed in the boot order unfortunately.

I'm not even sure it has a name. The laptop here is a HP envy touchsmart j144na. I've been looking online but can't find a motherboard.

However I'm sure it's not a hardware fault. I used this configuration with the SSD and HDD before for over a year in this laptop, and it worked fine. Only after it came back from warranty did it begin to do this.

it sounds like it may depend on what they did. if they had to replace the mobo it may need a BIOS update
