for the past few weeks my internet has been really * going from 100mb to 40-34mb so i gave virgin media a call and she * about doing tests and long story short it even made it worse now its between 13-19mb so i told them and now there telling me its because i have to many devices connected, my besktop my ipad and two phones and the other reason they said is because my desktop is connected wireless(its what i used to do my speed tests whren i was getting 100+mb and 40-34) so they said i need to use a ethernet cable to increase the speed and my modem is down stairs in the kitchen and i cant move so i need a decent router. the max im willing to spend is £80 but would prefare anything under £60 thanks

So what you need to do is troubleshoot it to your equipment or their connection.

I understand what you are saying about you used to be getting 100mbps via wifi from your desktop but wifi is subject to interference and other environmental variables that you may not have control over, thus it is understandable that they are not just going to trust the speed numbers from WiFi.

So what you need to do is take a computer to where the modem is, disconnect the router and plug the computer straight into it, reboot the modem so it resets its IP connection to your computer and do a speed test.
If results suck then the problem is modem or connection and get on the phone with VM and tell them this, and if they don't want to fix it then you demand...
My guess is they're full of dung over at Virgin Media and need to send someone out to check connections. When I first got Comcast at my new house (and I hate Comcast, but choices are limited at the new digs), I had them out weekly fixing things until it was finally right. It took four different techs to determine some cables needed to be replaced in the house.

What kind of router do you have currently?

Depending on what is easier, ether mover your computer down to the kitchen for a few hours and plug directly into the modem and test your speed or buy or barrow a long cable and plug your computer in that way.

Do some test and see if its actually the wireless that is messing with you or the actual ISP is giving you poopy speeds. If its the latter then call them and tell them to fix their crap, it could also be the modem itself and once again call them and tell them to fix their crap.

If the speeds are fine straight from modem via Ethernet then disconnect your PC from the modem, plug router back into modem, reboot modem and router, plug cable from router into PC and test again. If speeds are bad then the problem is your router.

If the speeds at router using ethernet are good then it is a wifi problem.
