Is my CPU temp too high?

So unfortunately I don't have any previous temps to base this off of. I have an Alienware x51 with an Intel i7-2600 and a GTX 660 instead of the stock graphics card. Today I opened it up and completely cleaned out the dust and reapplied some thermal paste. Reading online it seems that CPU temps should only be around 35-40C after applying new paste however my x51 is ranging from 52-59 for both core temps while idle and going from around 62-70 while gaming. Is this standard with this specific type of computer? After looking on Dell forums it seems other people who have the x51 were also idling at 50-60. However shouldn't it be lower after putting brand new thermal paste on? The computer is running quietly and doesn't seem to be having any issues thus far however I haven't started gaming yet.

Solution
It's a fine paste. There are some that might be 1-3c better under load, but the difference will be almost negligible.

Yes, idle is too high. Surprising tho, that the load temps are still that good. I suspect you either used too much TIM or you didn't get the cooler mounted back on properly. Is it the stock cooler? If so, check that all 4 feet of the cooler are firmly and flat on the board. If one of them pulls away, cooling will suffer. You may want to release (CCW) each thumb tab individually, pull up, reset (CW), and press back down on each post while holding the cooler firmly to the CPU.

Yes it is the stock cooler, I will check tomorrow to make sure it is mounted correctly. In the event that it is mounted correctly, do you suggest I clean the thermal paste off and try reapplying it?

Ceramique 2, I have pretty little experience with different types of thermal paste so i'm not sure if its good or not.

This is the amount, pattern, and direction preferred for Arctic pastes on Sandy Bridge I7s..
