Hello, my Dell 14z 5423 mobo went kaput (3 beeps). It was Core i7 motherboard and the same mobo is either not available of expensive. So instead, Can I install a Core i5 or Core i3 based mobo - all fit the 14z 5423 form factor. Thanks.

If it's from the same range it 'might' work, you really need someone familiar with that model to join the conversation. You are also going to need to talk to Microsoft as your Windows licence will be invalid as it was tied to the original motherboard, they are likely to allow you to switch it over to another motherboard but are actually under no obligation to do so under the licence you bought from Dell

Hi
Since this is a laptop / ultrabook from 2012/2013 only Dell or the OEM who makes its motherboards will be able to supply a suitable NEW motherboard to fit its case

There are I7m, I5m & I3m verions you may be able to get a suitable motherboard second hand or repaired but for a new one you will need to contact Dell.

There are specialists who can fix some motherboard faults for you

Thanks ...I have ordered genuine DELL part ..on ebay from a supplier in Dallas area...will post you an update. Sizzling - You said my windows will be invalid. will it stop working or will it throw error messages? Or its a legal obligation to get a permission from Microsoft?

Hi

If the motherboard is same model as previously it is likely that Microsoft support will re activate Windows if Windows detects different serial numbers on the motherboard and de activates

[ I suspect you have a Dell specific OEM version of Windows 7 which has been updated to Win 10]

Folks,

Happy to report that my motherboard replacement worked. But there are some issues - which is over and beyond my limited knowledge. When I started the system after installing the new mobo, it would not reboot using the hard-disk - it was saying PXE-MOF error. it even said check the cable. But diagnostics were fine and working. Finally only able to reboot from disk using the UEFI bootmode with secure option on.

I am guessing this might be due to an older BIOS version on the motherboard. Trying to get the latest BIOS and make it work with out UEFI ...but question - what is WEFI boot mode with secure option. why only this boot mode work and why not legacy?

Btw, windows has not thrown any errors for the mobo change as we had anticipated.

Hi

Pxe errors usually mean
Boot order is wrong, should be dvd then hdd or hdd then dvd
Pxe is booting up from operating system files from a pxe server over the ethernet cable.

Rarely used in home networks

Secure boot only usefull if win 8 or latter .
It should not stop you booting if turned off

I cant see what windows versions you have
Ideally you need to set the bios or uefi settings to similar to those on your old motherboard.
If secure boot setting exists it means you have uefi not bios

I am running Windows 10, Juggled around with the boot order.

I was trying to update the BIOS.

Boot order is CD/USB/Harddrive.

The Dell System Detect software is failing. No error messages - just nothing happens when I run the Dell System Detect.

Also another problem is that the battery is not charging. BIOS setup requires a 90W power supply but I dont have a 90W power supply - I only have a 65W - I am unable to change this. Somewhere I read this is also due to a bad BIOS version.

But unable to update the BIOS ...Any ideas/suggestions?
