Switch 2x4gb for 2x8gb or just add additional 16gb

I'm in quite the dilemma and I don't know much about RAM memory.

I got 8gb of RAM installed with dual channeling (2x4gb). I know that dual channeling is a lot faster, but is it better to get a 16gb single stick (for a total of 24gb) or switch the 2x4gb for a 2x8gb (for a total of 16gb)?

Solution
Unless you are heavily multitasking, 8gb is fine.
Do not bother changing anything unless you have a problem that more ram will fix.

Look at the task manager performance section.
Your hard fault page rate should be negligible.

If you want 16gb, it is safest to buy a supported 2 x 8gb kit.
Disparate kits do not always work together.
Depends on the motherboard, cpu, and chipset. Most of the time I would say get the 2X8GB and see if your current 2X4GB will play nice with it but it is not 100%. I would not get the 16GB stick and add it to your 2X4GB setup as it would mess with the dual channel setup and make it so not all the ram is in dual channel mode, and it might not work together at all.
