Suggestions for upgrading to a triple monitor setup?

Hello everyone,

I currently have two 1080p monitors but gaming on one. I wanted to upgrade my setup to be able to play on a triple 1080p monitor setup at fairly high settings. Here is my current build:

CPU: i7 920 OC @ 3.99GHz, cooled by Be Quiet! Shadowrock 2
Mobo: Intel Smackover DX58SO
GPU: MSi R9 390 (not OC'd)
RAM: 12GB DDR3 Kingston
PSU: Cooler Master V650
Case: Xigmatek Asgard (soon to be changed to Inwin 909 to permit custom watercooled loop)

*Everything is running on air*

So my question is, what would be the best (cheapest?) move to upgrade my system so i can play games on 3x 1080p monitors? Should i simply buy a second r9 390 and crossfire them or are there better options?

Thanks :)

crap yea, had a derp moment there, its triple 1440p (7680*1440) that is 11million.
I think really a 390 will do, you may not get the best performance in some demanding games, but i think that for 5760*1080, dual 390 is overkill, youd be better off probably selling the 390, get something along the lines of a 980ti, you can get them about £300, and use the saved money to get a better cpu, youll probably need a new mobo with that as well.
What si your budget for upgrading?
Your current 1080P monitor used for gaming will have about 2gb of pixels.
Gaming on triple 1080P will have 6gb of pixels, more than even a 4k monitor.
You are looking at a GTX1080 at least and probably a titan X pascal if you play fast action games.

It really is a moot point because I think your I7-920 will limit you badly.

You really should be looking at a I5-6600K cpu that is overclocked.

I don't quite get what you mean by "Gaming on triple 1080P will have 6gb of pixels, more than even a 4k monitor.". I am planning to play on 3 1080p monitors, but 4k is basically playing on 4x 1080p monitors, no?

And how bad (in %) do you think my fps in game will drop due to my i7 920 OC @3.99GHz not being strong powerful enough, roughly?

triple 1080p is 5760x1920 = 11059200 pixels
4k is 3840x2160 = 8294400 pixels

Basically, you need a card capable of runninh 4k.
I used to play surround with a 970, and then i moved up to a 980ti, and the 980ti was all i really needed, playing GTA V on v/high at ~60fps, but you do need to look at upgrading your cpu

Triple 1080p is actually 5760x1080 = 6'220'800 pixels, a little more including the bezels
4k is, as you said, 3840x2160 = 8'294'400

And what about crossfire R9 390? Would you recommend it?

Ok here's what i think i will do:

I will upgrade my cpu, and mobo/ram if required, get the 3 monitors, test it with my r9 390, and if i'm not satisfied with the performance i get, i shall upgrade to something like a 980ti. Does this sound like a good plan?

UPDATE: I think i can actually convince my dad to swap pc's as he has an i7 4790 (non-k) and he doesn't use his PC for much intensive tasks. Would this be powerful enough?
