i am looking to place a wireless extender in my room and connect my PC to the ethernet port on it. the reason im doing this is because when im downloading things of steam, the whole houses internet is slowed down unless i cap the bandwidth at 32 kb/s , which is extremely slow and has so far taken a day and a half to download 4 gigabytes. the extender would provide better wireless in my room and ethernet for my PC. is this true? or would the extender slow down the wifi even MORE? tl;dr- pc slows down whole house, would wireless extender with ethernet port help?

Solution

"a MAC right next to the router"
And what would this be, exactly?

What I meant was...some PC like devices...is there any need to have them all WiFi? Can you hardwire some of them?

No it would't, getting a extender is to get a better signal if your router isn't providing a large enough range or isn't wireless. the only way to really solve this problem is to get a faster connection (better internet deal) or like you said cap the bandwidth.

i can already cap the bandwidth through steam which is what slows it down, the problem is how unbearably long things take to download. any help with that?

Current performance sucks
Router---------------------------------------WiFi-PC

WiFi still sucks
Router--------------------------------------Extender-PC

Might not suck so much
Router---------------Extender------------------------PC

The issue is the overall WiFi. Putting an 'extender' in the same place as you PC simply means the 'extender' gets the same crappy signal as your PC does now.

So...
Is there any possibility of taking some of these devices OFF WiFi, and running a Cat5e ethernet cable?

not to sure on how to explain this but we have a MAC right next to the router. if i connect this using an ethernet cable would that count as disconnecting a device from the wireless and speed up the rest?
