The problem is on a Toshiba Tecra 730XCDT laptop. I have to hold Escape for 3 seconds then press F1 to enter BIOS, and the boot options only involve both hard drives and floppy drive (which doesn't exist). The CD drive works in Windows 98, so the drive is fine. I know the CMOS battery is dead but no matter how many screws come out I can't get this thing apart. I tried updating the BIOS but it says insert 1.44 MB diskette! Any assistance much appreciated.

Some really old stuff there, I don't know why you are still keeping the laptop but there's pretty much nothing most of us can do beside telling you t o get a new laptop. Maybe you have important files you don't want to abandon just yet. Anyway If you do have something you dear in the laptop I suggest remove the harddrive and I'll continue to guide you.

This is not my main laptop :)
"It says insert system disk in drive
Press any key when ready"

I have a boot CD in the drive and have the hard disk removed, and it repeats the message when I press a key.
