I have a server computer that I got pretty cheap and threw in a 960- it works great. I now want to replace my motherboard with a standard one so that I can easily upgrade and replace parts and have 2 PCI x16 slots so I could run SLI in the future.

Will my Xeon e3 1220 v3 (which I know is haswell socket) fit into any haswell motherboard and work properly, or does it only work in server haswell motherboards? I was browsing scan and noticed there are haswell motherboards (socket 1150) and then Xeon socket 1150 motherboards.

Solution
Most high end (H97/Z97) will support the E3 1220 v3, but you need to read the CPU supported list on the motherboard manufacturer's site. You may also need a bios update before using the xeon

Is a bios update easy to do?
