Booting from usb? Quick Question.

The SATA port on my laptop is broken. I can only plug in a usb. So I thought I would install Windows 10 to a external hard disk.

Following tutorials for Windows To Go, I used GimageX to load an iso to my hard disk.

I saw this error when I plugged it in,
"Windows PE cannot start because the actual SYSTEMROOT directory (X:\Windows) is different from the configured one (X:\$windows.~bt\Windows). This can be configured from dism.exe with the /set-targetpath command. Please consult the documentation for more details.

Press the OK button or close this message to reboot."

I tried making a bootable usb stick with Windows 10 so I could install Windows directly to the hard disk.

I got this error:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. Setup does not support configuration of or installation to disks connected through a USB or IEEE 1394 port.

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

All I'm trying to do, is to use a laptop without plugging in to SATA. Does anyone have any solutions to this problem? I appreciate any tips even if they're remotely related.

Thanks.

Did you first prepare your USB stick (or use a certified stick)? THIS details the steps to prepare your USB stick if not one of the few certified sticks. Using diskpart is a simple way to make the stick partition active, necessary for a bootable stick.

I have tried Windows 10 Enterprise, Pro, and Windows 7. All 3 give the exact same errors.

I saw the link you posted before and got the first error I mentioned.

Hi

Does your laptop have a dvd drive that can be removed and replaced with a tray which holds sata hard disk?

Have you looked at having the sata port replaced or repaired by an expert?

Finally some laptops have a esata port which would power a external esata hard drive which would behave like an internal drive

The laptop is a samsung np300e5a. Although I have a dvd-drive, I wasn't able to remove it. If I do end up removing it, is there another SATA slot? How would this help me?

I am still looking to replace the currenct SATA port but it seems unlikely due to the region I live in. I'm looking for any alternatives.

I haven't been able to find an eSATA port.

Can you suggest anything else?

Do I use the tutorial you mentioned on the 32gb usb stick or 1TB hard disk?

My goal is to plug in the 1TB hard disk in a usb port and use Windows 10.
