4K PC gaming on Samsung TV and upscaling from 1080P

If anyone with knowledge can assist, I would be grateful. So I've done a lot of research on this and can't quite get it figured out. I just got a 40" 4K 2016 samsung tv and I thought there was a way to upscale 1080p gaming to 4K? I know it wouldn't look as good as true 4K but I wanted to just do a comparison but can't figure out how for the life of me.

If I keep the tv set at native 4K resolution and try to run a game at 1080p in full screen, it runs at 1080p and looks exactly like it does if I set res to 1080p and run game at 1080p. That can't be what they mean by upscaling right? If I set the res at 1080P through nv control panel, and run 1080p it's 1080p and looks horrible just like setting the resolution on the tv to 4K.

I don't have a setting on my tv to select resolutions so I have to change it through nv control panel...what am I missing here?

Your games should run natively @4K on a 4K display. I know for TVs I can DSR 4K on a 1080p display. Are you saying that you have your desktop set to 4K and your games are not running in 4K? You should be able to select 3840x2160 in-game.

They'll run fine in 4K at 4K but I was under the impression there was a way to upscale the 1080p source from gaming to 4K, similar to how it upscales sd/hd content to 4K from the sd/hd signal it receives. I swear I saw that it was possible with gaming too but maybe I'm mistaken?
