I need to connect a device to my desktop computer in order to reinstall the firmware. FW is already installed on the desktop. The manufacturer indicates that you need to change the IPv4 IP address to a manual IP address. 192.168.1.12 sub 255.255.225.0

Using a web browser I go to 192.168.1.10 It works no problem but the thing is in doing so I cannot access the internet. Do I need to put something in the Default Gateway? and what about the DNS? what option should be ? Reason why I need the computer to go online is because if it happens again I would like to be able to do the whole thing remotely using Teamviewer.

So there's no way of doing it with one network card? Any reasons why the manufacturers set it up that way? Would be much easier just to install the FW by installing it right on the device. Any reason why you need to change the computer's IP address?

My first assumption was that what ever device had to have firmware updated was desired to be on the internet subnet. If that is the case, then two NIC cards is the best answer. If having the device directly on the same network as all the router traffic is acceptable, then @Hlsgsz if correct, just change the subnet of the router's DHCP to the 192.168.1.x and do a MAC reservation on the one PC with the .12 that the vendor requires.

I think I might try a second network card as the computer I'm trying to do the FW install is a work computer. On a side note I just bought a Netgear ProSafe gs108t Smart Switch https://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/smart/stackable-smart-switch.aspx
it was $20 off and I needed a switch just to expand my network. Not sure what they mean by "smart" I think it's an unmanaged switch. Same thing to get access to the switch you need to put the computer in the 192.168.0.X range then on a web browser go to 192.168.0.239 I have a Mac so I can't use the Smart Control Center tool but how else can I access the web UI?

You can add second IP address (preferably from different network) on same network card. Go to your NIC' properties, IPv4, change to manual settings, and add two IP addreses:
- first one from your router' network, with default gateway to the router
- second from your device. network, with no network.
Both networks should be with 255.255.255.0 netmask.
