Hi, I'd like to connect my 720p laptop to my 1080p TV via HDMI, and display in 1080p on the TV. I assume in order to do this I will need the signal to go straight to the TV (so not display on the laptop's screen) instead of simply cloning the laptop screen to the TV? If so, how would I do this?

Thanks!

When I hit windows+p and choose second screen only the TV display switches from displaying the laptop's resolution (as it does by default) to its own 1080p. Thanks for all the answers!

you haven't mentioned your OS but in win 7 the Win+p keys ought to get you there - just select projector only (or words to that effect - can't remember exactly how the options are worded but it will be obvious).

Actually, i don't think you are right about having to have the laptop screen off - depends a bit on your laptop's graphics but having said that - not a bad idea to have it off anyway.

It is very easy. Windows can manage this for you. Once your TV is plugged in you can

1) right click on your desktop
2) select display settings
3) you should see two displays, select "extend these displays"

You will now have 720p resolution on your laptop, and 1080p on your TV.
