Hey!

This morning, my computer crashed. Blue screen and everything. When I booted it up, the USB ports on my motherboard didn't work with my external hard drive. At all. They would either say that they didn't have anything on them, or the drive was inaccessible. When I tried going through device manager to see if it had anything to say about it, it had a yellow warning triangle next to it. I tried to open it and got another blue screen.

The external hard drive works fine on any other port except for the USB 3.0 ports. Is there anything that I can do to fix this? My motherboard is an MSI 970 Gaming.

Hi there pigeoncracker,

Even though the drive works just fine on an USB 2.0 port, it may be a good idea to back up the data stored on it. You should do so, even when you are not facing any HDD related issue.

Apart from that, you can go to Device Manger -> right click and uninstall -> unplug the drive -> reboot -> plug the drive back in.
In case the issue persists, you can go to your MOBO's website and update/reinstall the USB 3.0 drivers.

Do you have USB 3.0 ports on the back of the case as well? In case you do, you can see if the issue persists if you attach the drive over there.

Let me know how thisgoes,

It seems to have magically fixed itself after two days. No idea how, but computers are quirky like that. It was plugged into the back usb port when it crashed, and now they suddenly work. I'm stumped, but grateful nevertheless. Thanks for your help.
