Hello all,

Any help with my issue here is much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I have an Acer Aspire V5 netbook (Windows 8, 2.5 years old) that for the last week or so has often (2-3 times a day, only using it about 4 times a day) been continually restarting, along with being a little slower than usual. There is normally no blue screen when it happens, but this all began with a blue screen or two.

As said, it does not always do this, but once it does (usually while I am using Google Chrome but sometimes just while doing normal MS Word tasks) it restarts several times over, showing me the Acer logo and starting up. Once it starts all my desktop items are moved to the right side and some are on top of one another.

I am trying to figure out if my problems are hardware or software.

Nothing funny is showing up under processes in task manager (which sometimes doesn't respond), but the CPU is often around 95-98% when I check it. In the error logs I noticed HAL (13) and APXACC along with kernel power errors.

I ran sfc /scannnow and it said Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I have the details of the CBS log but am not sure what they mean- I can post them if that is helpful!

After a few failed attempts (progress stopping early on) of Windows Defender, I finally did a quick scan which didn't find anything, but the virus and spyware definitions are out of date. I am trying to update them but I believe it's not progressing. I also can't seem to do normal updates (it is set on manual) and gets stuck on 'checking for updates'.

Any suggestions/advice is much appreciated!!!

In the Windows settings "Recovery" page there are several options: a lighter "refresh" and a more thorough "reset." There are also options to keep your files or delete everything.

From Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17085/windows-8-restore-refresh-reset-pc

The CPU usage points to some software issue, whether malware related or just a messed up copy of Windows. It sounds like a clean install may be a good option either way. However, to go further you can get to the BIOS setup utility and let it run a while. If it doesn't restart there it's suggestive that the hardware is ok. There are diagnostics I could suggest if you want to check that before wiping it out.

- memtest to check RAM (that runs in circles until you stop it, if it goes overnight with no errors you should be fine
- Seagate Seatools checks HDD health and isn't restricted only to Seagate owned brands.

It might be wise to make sure your stuff is backed up first.
The first things to try is Windows Reset (a new feature in 8 and above, in the PC settings app)
If there are still problems you can download a fresh copy from MS servers (the activation key is stored in the BIOS in laptops that shipped with 8/8.1). Tip: if you came with 8.0 originally you can do a fresh install of 8.1 and activate with the built-in key. The utility "RWEverything" can show the key embedded in the BIOS. 8.1 won't install with the built in key but there are "generic" installation keys; once installed use that util (ACPI tab > MSDM)

Thanks for your reply.

I was finally able to install Windows security updates after many failed attempts. Again, it's always a quick restart, no blue screen. CPU still around 98-99%.

Windows Defender wasn't working so I used Malwarebytes and it removed 17 suspicious files.

Will Windows Reset wipe the hard drive and restore to factory settings basically?

As always, any info is helpful. Thanks!
