HI.. Like many other I am also facing the problem with WD Elements 1tb external disk. Light is blinking and able to hear noise( tick) but its not detecting in my machine. I opened device management window and its asking me to intialize the disk. I think this is the reason why I am unable to see WD HD in Western Digital DataLifeGaurd software too. I was suggested to take data back up first before intiliazing HD in device management window. However there is not guarantee that it will work. I tried taking data backup with using third party tools but it dint helped. Till date I never dropped the HD even once and I dont know how all of sudden it stopped working. And data recovery is not a small thing and its expensive too. I dont know why these many complaints against WD products. As prakas001 stated is there anything wrong with these products? Can anyone please help me if there is a way to fix this

Hey there, Harsha_11.

Sorry for the unfortunate experience you're having with your drive. :\

Not being initialized is the most probable reason for some tools not to be able to recognize the drive. I'd recommend that you try a different cable as well as a different computer to see if you get the same results.
For data recovery options, you could always give it a go with Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if it's properly recognized by that OS, so that you can recover your important information. If that doesn't help and if you don't want to go for professional help, such as a data recover company, I'm afraid your only other option would be data recovery software and hope that one of the suggestions proves useful...

The WD drives (WD Elements model included) does not have any particular problems whatsoever. The causes for a corrupted partition or physical failure could be numerous (it could range from a virus and/or improper usage to mechanical failure), so it's impossible for me to determine what might have happened with each case. I personally have a My Passport which was bought back in 2007 and still works (although for 9 years it has accumulated quite a bit of bad sectors, but that's just fine). Anyway, unfortunately no one can guarantee 100% non-failure rate. That's why it's always recommended that one should have a backup of his/her important information at all times.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.
